A Week in Berkeley: Showing Up Matters
From small moments to community spaces, this week was a reminder that Southside is lived in every day.
This week in Southside was a reminder of something simple.
This neighborhood isn’t abstract. It’s lived in every day.
I spent time walking through the area, talking with people, and being present in the spaces that hold our community together.
You see it in small moments:
Neighbors looking out for each other
Community spaces that people rely on
Mutual aid quietly supporting people every day
You also see where things need attention:
Streets that need repair
Infrastructure that hasn’t kept up
Public space that feels stretched thin
Southside is carrying a lot right now. Growth is happening, but the investment hasn’t kept pace.
That’s why this campaign is focused on something direct.
If Southside is expected to grow, then Southside needs to be supported.
That means:
Taking care of basic infrastructure
Supporting the spaces people actually use
Making sure the neighborhood is livable, not just dense
This campaign starts with showing up, listening, and being accountable to what people are experiencing every day.
