Public Space Is What Makes a Neighborhood
Southside’s public spaces carry history, memory, and daily life. They deserve protection and care.
Southside has always been more than buildings.
It’s a place shaped by public life, memory, and community space.
This week, I spent time around People’s Park and nearby areas, where you can still feel how much these spaces matter to people.
Public space does a lot of quiet work:
It gives people somewhere to gather
It holds history and community memory
It creates space to exist without needing to spend money
But in Southside, we don’t have enough of it.
We are asked to carry density without being given the public infrastructure that makes a neighborhood work.
That needs to change.
Public land should not be treated like surplus space. It is part of what makes a community livable.
That means:
Protecting existing public spaces
Expanding access to basic amenities
Making sure community voice is part of major land decisions
Southside deserves to be treated like a neighborhood, not an afterthought.
